Default Waveforms not calculating for OMF on Xsan

HI! Pro Tools 11.1.2 will not calculate waveforms when importing an OMF when the session folder is located on an Xsan. The Task Manager reports "Calculating Waveform Overviews" indefinitely. I can play the timeline but basically I'm working in Block mode. If I close and reopen the session, Pro Tools tries again to calculate the waveforms but never does it. Also I can delete the WaveCache.wfm file which forces waveforms to be recalculated but still the waveform calculation is stuck.

Now that I've dug further into this, it seems that any kind of media on the Xsan has problems. I am importing a video into my timeline from the Xsan. If I choose to import the audio, Pro Tools 11.1.2 stays on "Importing Audio" progress dialog indefinitely. If I copy the video to my local drive, it works as expected. Same with Music. No waveforms are generated and the Task Manager is stuck on "Drag from Browser."

However it works fine when I copy the same session folder to my Desktop and import the same OMF (but only if the OMF is on the local drive). I can copy this session to the Xsan volume and the waveforms are there, so that's a temporary workaround. But I'd like this to be fixed as I work on an Xsan volume in my work environment.

Everything worked fine in Pro Tools 11.0.3. This is a new problem as of 11.1.2.

If anyone has any ideas please share.

Mac 10.9.1
Pro Tools 11.1.2 (non HD)

I have submitted a bug on the IdeaScale.

I should add that if I stay working on the Xsan without waveforms, Pro Tools freezes if I attempt to consolidate any clips in the OMF or open the Fades dialog. This is an unrecoverable freeze and I have to force quit Pro Tools.

I would look at the drive and file permissions on the Xsan first

Thanks Craig. Good suggestion - I almost always check permissions when I have problems with the Xsan.

In this case, ownership and permissions on the local and Xsan versions of the session are exactly the same. It does not matter if I change the entire session folder structure to world-read-writable either. Also it doesn't explain why it's always worked from 10 up to 11.0.3 with absolutely no issues until the 11.1.2 upgrade.

Since my original post I have trashed the database files in /Users/Shared/Pro Tools to no avail. I have trashed preferences as well. This is the first major problem I've had since upgrading to PT 11. I've been using 11.0.3 on Mavericks 10.9.1 for a few weeks, and it's been working fine. The only thing I changed today was the version of Pro Tools.

Well, I've decided that I just have to go back to 11.0.3 for now. Luckily I was able to get it from the other audio workstation in our building as I can't find the download anymore (only 11.0.2 shows up in my account). Although I know it's not qualified for Mavericks 10.9.1, it's been working for me since the update was released.

If anyone has any more info or ideas, please post here. I don't want to stagnate versions of Pro Tools!

I have found problems importing files from the XSAN. I had to caopy my SFX folder that resides on our XSAN to a local drive just to get files to import. Same with importing audio rom a movie. I also can not "SAVE COPY IN" if ANY of the files are on the XSAN, it just stops processing. No freeze, just no further action. I have copied the offending XSAN files to a local drive and it works. Weird behavior, never had a problem in any of the 10 versions.

Default Problems Importing Media on Xsan

Thanks for reporting this here. I went back to 11.0.3 and everything returned to normal. I'll stay there until this can be resolved.

Hopefully Avid Support has gotten the message from here and the IdeaScale that I submitted. I don't know how else to tell them about it. Please vote on the IdeaScale so I don't look like I'm crazy!

I have this same problem after bouncing a mix. I cannot import the print without it getting stuck on calculating waveforms (it doesn't matter if I choose 'import after bounce', or manually import). I'm also working on a Xsan and have only seen this problem after updating to 11.1.2. The strange thing is I can import other audio (like from my sound library, which is also on the san) with no problem.

I haven't found a solution and am about to roll back to 11.0.2

I'll be voting your ideascale post soon!

Default Problems with Xsan

I hate to bring this back up, but since we haven't seen any updates since my original post in January, I'm starting to get worried. Any chance this will be addressed in the future Avid? I would like to stay on Pro Tools if possible. My entire department is going Adobe, and Audition works great on the Xsan but I don't really want to switch if I don't have to.

To recap I am stuck on 11.0.3 because it at least works on the Xsan. I would like to update because I very frequently run into the problem outlined here:
http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/e...fs=Search&pn=1

When I try to import an OMF from Premiere, I get hit with this "Could not complete your request because OMFI_ERR: Bento container error; in omfsOpenFile," so I have to quit PT11, open PT10, import the OMF, save, and then open it in PT11 again. It's getting to be a pain, because about 50% of the OMFs I get have this problem. I am mixing anywhere from 3 to 15 videos a day, so it can be a pain!

The OMFs that gave me this problem import fine in 11.1.2, so it seems the problem has been fixed in 11.1.2, but I can't work on the Xsan with that version.

Just wanted to "bump" this post because this inability to work on the Xsan cripples my workflow, and so does 11.0.3's inability to take half the OMFs I throw at it. I look forward to some resolution!

For anyone having this same issue, it is NOT resolved in 11.1.3. Same exact behavior, files sourced on Xsan just hang in the task manager when calculating waveforms.

Just wanted to save you the trouble of finding out yourself.
