Default file sharing between 2 macs

i recently bought a iBook and i have protools free version on there. i also have a G4 with Protools LE on there. the problem is being able to send protools files from the laptop to the G4. Now i've looked at several tutorials on MAC "file Sharing" but i cannot get it to seem to work - especially (if you are familiar with the process) on the th part where you go to "chooser" and then select the "appleshare" icon. basically - can anyone tell me how i may share files on both computers??? thanks!

I've got a G4 with pt le 5.1.1 and I also have an i-mac. I Use file sharing all the time and have had no problems at all !!

If you create a user name and password for each computer , you can access each other's hard drives.

1.Turn apple talk On.
2. Turn file sharing On, from the control panel
3. Create a User & Password
4. Control click your HD and choose get info them turn on the file sharing.

It's better explianed under the Mac Help-Sharing Files.

** You can even launch software through file sharing.

I know you've seen already many tutorials, but this one is really extremly clear. Check it out:

http://www.atpm.com/network/files/file_sharing.htm

They say:
Quote:
Open the Chooser from the Apple menu, then select the AppleShare icon to see a list of Macs with shared files.

Select the desired Mac, then OK to see its shared files.

If you only want to transfer files between the two, then simply
1.shut down the source Mac,
2.Connect both macs via a firewire cable,
3. Start the source Mac whilst holding down the "T" key. It will launh as a Hard drive only ( Screen blue with a a yellow firewire logo )It's desktop icons will appear on the destination Mac's desktop ( looks a little messy).
4. Transfer your files by dragging them to the required destination folder(s).
5. When finished, drag the hard disk icon of the source Mac to the waste bin of the destination mac and all the icons will disappear.
6. Power down the source Mac.

It is all very quick

I'm not sure what you mean by cross-wired, but the ethernet cable you use will have to be an ethernet crossover cable, if you are going directly between the two macs.

If they're connected via a hub, then regular ethernet cables will do the trick.

I'd never heard of the firewire way before, Ill have to check that out. Which is faster when transferring files, firewire or ethernet ? (in general, i know computer specs vary)

coleslaw - you need to be more specific. Why can't you open the session? What does ProTools tell you when you try to do this? I'm sure you know that PT Free only gives you 8 tracks so if you're using more than that in your PT LE session it'll be a problem. I seem to remember a limitation with either sample rate or bit depth, too. Is this the case? Maybe your PT LE session is 24bit but PT Free can only be 16bit. I don't remember.

Either way try to be specific about ProTools dialogues that tell you why it won't open and post that here...

the firewire way is WAY faster and SOOO easy. its just like plugging in an external HD(which is exactly what the host computer sees it as) just FW to FW and hold the "T" key down when booting the second computer, and your desktop from the 2nd mac shows up on the desktop of the host, and then you just move the files like you would from another HD or removable drive.(click and drag)
