Default iTunes says its library file isn\'t valid!?!

Hi, since yesterday, iTunes won't open anywhere on my computer - all iTunes mp3s on my harddrive and iTunes itself just says -"The iTunes Music Library File cannot be read because it does not appear to be a valid library file" Now, I can import the mp3s into ProTools and hear them, but iTunes is acting like a stranger in my own computer!!
I am a slight newbie - so I hope it is a simple problem...

The iTunes Music Library file, located in the iTunes folder inside your Documents folder (or inside your Music folder with iTunes 3 for Mac OS X or iTunes 4), is a database of the songs listed in iTunes, and the playlists you've created. Do not move this file to another location. If you delete it, iTunes will create a new, empty copy when you open the application.

at that point you can start over

Thanks for the links - they were a great help. Stupidly, I made a back-up (on my new external drive) of iTunes - but only the mp3s themselves. I didn't realise the library file was needed this way. Must have been drunk. Anyway, I trashed the file and it made a new one, but won't let me re-import the songs through File>Import. But if I go to where they are in the hard-drive (not through iTunes) and click it, it opens up iTunes and appears there...
I kinda don't mind having to do it this way, but it just takes more damn time from me. Am I doing something wrong? (Again)

Thanks again mate.
