Default mBox vs. apple audio extension/ USB weirdness

hi, i've been using the mbox for about a month now, and was using it in some live shows in NY recently and i've started noticing some peculiar things.
during the shows i was running MAX/MSP or Protools with live Pluggo plug-in manipulation on a G3 Pismo 500, 1Gig RAM, ~400MB allotted to either app.

things i've noticed: sometimes when the mbox is plugged in on startup the computer crashes almost immediately, getting an address error trying to load the apple audio extension (second init i think? after the extension manager.) I don't think it matters which version of AAE it is, i tried a couple different ones, 1.5.1, and 2.0.2.
can be solved of course most times by unplugging the mbox and plugging it in after startup, but that's annoying. and it didn't happen all the time, but i did crash onstage one night and it took a bit of thinking fast to get it to reboot. took several tries between songs.
second thing i have noticed is that suddenly no usb hubs work. i have two usb ports on the computer, so mbox takes one. i have a little dr bott that had a mouse and a midi I/O, but although they are recognized as being there by the sys profiler, they aren't getting enough power to light up/throughput data. i replaced it with a powered usb hub, and same thing if hot-swapped. if i have THAT plugged in at startup, they get enough power to throughput.

is the digi usb init rerouting usb power or something? what's going on here?

Try turning off any startup (or wake up) sounds - or ensure that the OS isn't using the MBox for audio. If the OS tries to play back a sound before the MBox is initialized - it will hang the Mac.

I have the same problem. hard bomb crash when starting up with the message "blablabla apple Audio something blablabla"

I have the same T3 hub (not the problem for me)

when I unhook all my firewire devices (OWC 80 GB hard drive or archos CD burner) this goes away.

Are you on a pismo 400 by any chance?

You may want to try an extension set solely for the mbox...
