Default What do you guys think of the Focusrite Penta with AD card as upgrade for 001?

I think I decided the my upgrade on the 001's converters and preamp with be the focusrite penta with the ad converter card that has 24 bit up to 96khz. Would I be able to use 96 khz with the 001? if not now, maybe when there is an upgrade on the 001?

How do you guys think this setup will be? how much better are the converters and preamp in the focusrite?

thanks

compblue,

I don't know much about the Penta because the only pre i've ever owned is the Digimax.
But to answer your other question:
No, PTLE is limited to a max of 48kHz and I don't think that this will ever change.

Skman,

Actually that is an 8-ch converter you recommend, still a good option but that's a whole different product and price-point than what he is asking. As for the Penta, it certainly is going to be a better preamp than what is already on the Digi001. The A/D option allows you to bypass the onboard Digi001 converter allowing for greater dynamic range and headroom, as well as a better front-end converter as well. What is your budget? The reason I ask is... can you spend a little bit more and get the Voicemaster Pro with the Digital Output option? If so, you'll almost be in heaven..... for the long-term. Short-term, the wife might kick you out of the house but at least you have a realy nice signal path

If you live in europe, the Mindprint stuff could also be a good idea. I just got the mindprint di-port (ad & da and mic-pre) or the di-pro (micpre and ad-converters). The di-port costs about 250 euro's and the di-pro around 450 euro's...

I have a Penta with the A/D card installed and it's just a joy to use. It all goes in there (vox, bass, guitars, synths) and out to the 001 via SPDIF. Overall, a very clean signal without much coloration, which is to be expected from the whole Platinum range, but as Brad mentioned, more headroom and much better A/D conversion coming from the Penta.

VM Pro looks great as well, though if you're considering a Penta for now, I say 'go for it'!

Actually, PTLE 5.3.2 supports 96khz, but only with the digi002. The limitation in the 001 that prevents a 96khz sample rate is in the hardware. You can't force a 48khz a/d converter to go to 96khz.
It's not very likely that they will upgrade the 001, seeing as how the 002 already does 96khz.
