Default VCA automation overwriting original volume

We have been having a problem where tracks in a VCA group are being overwritten with the VCA automation being written inverse on a channel in the group.

Anybody's else seen this?

Its intentional behaviour so on replay you hear what you heard during auto record.
Say youre ramping the vca up and latch a slave fader on at a fixed position, for it to play back at a fixed position it would need the inverse of the vca move written to it - so when they're summed they cancel out and make a flat playback.
Is that what youre seeing?

I'm not in front of Protools right now, but if you CAN put the VCA in TRIM mode, I think it will not overwrite the line automation.. but as I said, I'm not in front of a Protools DAW to replicate the behavior. If my memory don't trick me, it will appear a blue line in the Group VCA. This in Auto Latch or Auto Touch.

if you use "write" in both vca and normal tracks, then it makes sense

No. The problem s that fr some reason, an entire track will be written over frm beginning to end with inverse VCA moves. So everything that is up, is down.

So you pull a VCA up and the track volume lowers?

That should be fairly obvious if you don't coalesce trims - ouch it would be painful.

As I said earlier, if you are putting a slave fader into write and leaving it flat for the duration of your vca writing, its intentional behaviour so it cancels out and plays back flat, as you wrote it...

Yeah, I've only seen this if you grab both the master and the slave at the same time. Usually I put the slaves in Touch/Trim and put the VCA in Latch and write from there.

I'll see if that's what he was doing.
