How many mics are you wanting. A good starting point would be a 4 pc set with snare-kick & 2 overheads. Most of the 4 pc sets are for live performance and not set up for recording. So a good starting point would be a Shure Beta 52A for kick, a SM57 for the snare and a pr of pg81 OH. If you've got the money the Audix DP7 is really sweet. http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/DP7/

Take a look at the Audix Fusion sets.

versatile mics. You can use some of them for guitar cabs as well and stuff.
Great sound.

i would send you to sweetwater but they don't carry these sets anymore and they are super cheap on musicians friend.

To be honest a couple hundred pounds. I've just spent money upgrading my setup and would like to record bands more.

6 mics ideal but I think I cn get by with 4, though I would like a decent sound. I have looked online and saw so many however only know certain ones like
shure pgdmk6 +4 akg packs .

I just saw the fusion packs and seem like good reviews, though I've saw the kick is pretty weak.

what mic's do you currently have???? Let's start there.

Do you have 57's?

We can get a decent sound going very low budget.
57 on Snare and believe it or not - kick - you'll have to get it right in the kick aimed at the beater. Might take a bit of EQ'ing it... Low Pass filter's etc..

If you have a decent condenser, there's your "crazy room mic" which will get the whole kit.

Then just apply some good mixing skills, eq, panning, compression - maybe even parallel compress....

You can do this very effectively on a tight budget w/ what you have and w/ some mixing skills, you can make it sound great.

Hope this helps.

I think your best bet is to build your own kit.
Audix D6-bass drum
SM57-snare
AT3031(discontinued but awesome)-hat
Sennheiser e604/e904-toms
MXL 2001, V6 or AT 3035, 4040-overheads
