Default How much time for DVD Commentaries?

How long do people usually expect to have to edit and mix 3 separate DVD Commentaries tracks for a 2 hour film?

I usually charge RT +1 hour edit +1 hour to be safe.
There's actually not much to do. Once you set EQ and compression it pretty much just runs along.

It can definitely be done in that amount of time, but I spend much longer, usually 6-7 hours including playback with the clients of the sections edited by the legal department. I move commentary lines around a bit to work better with the picture, draw out every single mouth tick and spit noise, and mix the picture audio to work with the commentary.

Overkill? Maybe. But my clients appreciate it (hopefully the DVD-watcher does too! )

And that would be for each version for a 2 hour film, or if there are multiple speakers on the track, about the same (with more editing to clean the tracks). However, I've done a few where there were 8 people in the room, all on separate lav mics, all bleeding into each other, all yelling and giggling and shouting over each other......uggh. Those took quite awhile.

My 2¢

Best,

Joe

it depends on the condition of the track when you receive it.

if it's just a linear track with no edit breaks, sure, it'll take about as long as Meads indicated.

but sometimes i'll get a track that has been cut up considerably. in this case, you have to treat it like a dialogue edit/cleanup, then a mix. in these cases, you can easily spend a few days on a single track.
