I was able to connect to carbon with my macbook pro mid 2015 running Catalina, but it's not what I want to use.
I found that using my (2)192 interfaces connected to the two carbon adat outputs gives me 16 outputs via the d/a outputs from the 192, plus the 8 line outs from carbon. Got to keep my old HD system now for providing the 24 outputs into my console.
edit - I think you're using your old HD system just for accessing / using the 192 i/o as a converter, right?

This is intriguing - thanks for sharing your experiences.

Did you connect two 192s via lightpipe - the blue Digi 192 i/o's? I wasn't aware the older interfaces had any sort of standalone operation mode (ie, the 192s were not connected to any host computer)?

You have to have a host computer running PTHD 8 to 10 with a digi pcie core card installed to have the digi 192 work as a D/A converter.

I'm trying re-up this thread because I planned to buy a Carbon card. My Mac Pro 5,1 is a 2012 machine with the sonnet ethernet card, Metal Compatible GPU AMD radeon 7970, with Bi-proc 3,46 Ghz Cpu trail and 128 go Ram under Ventura OS with open core 1.01 ...
Do you think this config is right to get carbon working well with latest release of protools ultimate ?
thanks a lot for reply, because carbon is a lot of investment for me, and it will be a huge disappointment, if oncetime at my house this don't work ...
king regards.

Hi there. I'm on the same boat as jayceebee, except running Monterey.
Can anyone confirm PT Carbon runs ok with the Sonnet Solo10G pcie card?
Thanks!

This'll fall squarely on the shoulders of the Community since we do not test or qualify the 5,1 for Carbon or test/qualify any PCIe AVB cards. We've also stopped testing the 5,1 in general with Pro Tools, but expect it to work.

I would use Martin Lo's OpenCore package 0.9.5. I'm in the process now and mounting the EFI boot is really simple. There's even a script to have the 5,1 see and use 8x32 sticks of ram.

Also many Mac Pro's are being bricked due the Boot ROM not being dumped. Many have been bricked over the years. A must read for these beast of machines.

A must read for this machines to stay healthy.

A Mac Pro that the garbage collection is not working anymore will have less than 1/3 of Free Space Full Size available, less than 22000 bytes available. Any less than this and you usually start having problems and could even brick your Mac Pro. This is critical with Big Sur and Monterey Software Updates, but also happened in the past with previous macOS versions (examples #1, #2) because the number of variables needed to be set-up for the software updates.
