Protools running laggy after format
Hi everyone, i have had a problem with thespeed of my computer and was wondering if anyone could help me out. im running m-powered on windows xp
its a dell dimention 4600, 2.5 gbRAM 2.4 single processor P4 ATI radeon HD3850 512mb GFX last summer i mixed a 12 minute short film, in the end i had 3 IR reverbs, 48 tracks, and compressors and eq's on every track and only until the end did my computer start slowing gown and getting choppy. recently i reformatted (1 week ago) to get rid of all my bloatware and basically start fresh. i followed the sticky where one of the mods writes a list on how to get max performance. And i have used Tuneup Utilities and Uniblue powersuite to get all latest drivers and further max out my computer for performance. However after i did all of this i mixed a 4 minute short film, and could barely use 3 noise reducers and 1 IR Reverb over 10 tracks. im not really sure what to do as i have a project due soon and i can barely mix anything anymore because pro tools is running soo slow and laggy. does anyone have any suggestions on what is going on? i cant really figure this one out. thanks in advance |

Re: Protools running laggy after format
Need a sandra report on your system.
Just from what you have listed the video card is too big for xp32 bit, leaving you very little memory for everything else. If that is the WAVES IR reverb you are using you should try something else for this system, convolutional reverbs a resource intensive by nature. |

Re: Protools running laggy after format
Thanks dave thanks for the reply, ill post a sandra report.
im not quite sure what you mean about my graphics card, i would have thought the upgrade from my previous stock card (nvidia geforce 4 mx440 AGP 8X) would have made working with video much smoother. can you explain how it would use more resources? also is there anyway to configure how to make it use less? Edit: and about the convolution reverb, i used 3 different ones with 48 tracks previous to when i formatted, now i can barely get 1, doesnt seem right to me. |

Re: Protools running laggy after format
Try pulling out those Kingston RAM modules and see if that helps.
Where is your non-USB audio drive? Turn off the wireless when running PT.

Sadly a working system going south is a common story. We need to begin with the known issues before we can move on to the more remote possible culprits.

Re: Protools running laggy after format
Are you using USB hard drives?
Your ram is mix matched. You need the same brand with the same timings or you can cause alot of problems. P4 is pretty old, my advice would be to search around the net for a good core Duo or core 2 Duo if strapped for cash. If not then a Core 2 Quad would be even better with an i7 being the best.
