Default Can\'t play audible new audio without recording

Extreme newbie here. When I record, for instance, a guitar track on one track, and I create a second track for a second guitar, I can't audibly play the second guitar track along with the recorded guitar track, unless I actually record what I am playing on the second guitar track. Merely clicking on record enable is not sufficient to enable me to reherse the second track as I play back what has already been recorded. In short, when record is enabled, but not recording, I can only hear what has already been recorded when I press play. There must be a solution that I have overlooked in my ingnorance. Any advice on what the solution is, besides finding an easier hobby?

Thanks

Switch from "Auto Input Monitoring" to "Input Only Monitoring"

we get this question alot around here. perhaps a change to the default setting for this would help out the new users. I guess you have to learn this sooner or later but not necessarily when you or just getting your first dose of gratification from your new PT DAW.

Thank you very much for your reply. I expect this will be an "interesting" adventure in learning and recording.

I see the "Auto Input Monitoring" line in the pull-down menu, which you indicate is the default, but I do not see a similar "Input only monitoring" selection. Where do I go in pro tools to make the change?
How do I make the change? Sorry that I have to ask that follow-up question, but I figured it would be self-evident when I got home and opened up a session. It was not. Thanks.

Press alt + k

You can also read all about it starting on page 154 of the Reference Guide. The Reference Guide is available from the help menu within the program. You should check it out.

O.K. I was looking for a second selection altogether, rather than assuming that the other end of the toggle swith was the choice I wanted. This evening, I will take a look at the (800+ page) Reference Guide to which you referred and figure out what in the heck the difference is between the two modes. Thanks, fella.
