Default Mac Wide Internal Hard Drives

I'm on a buget so i purched a G3 B&W 300 from a pawn shop. Now I'm looking on eBay for the largest and fastest hard drive that I can afford. I have been looking at the Seagates drives. Can someone give me some advise as to what to look? Will an adapter slow the drive down in case I wind up with a drive that needs one?
