Default Which converters work well with 001?

Greetings to all, I have few questions if you guys don't mind. I'm currently using Motu 1224 core with DP3 and selling it off to switch to Digi 001 + good converters.

My set up is Mac dual 1gig fully loaded, Motu midi express xt, few synths and ensoniq fizmo as a controller, K+H O-198 monitors and Midas Venice 160 as a main mixer, also next week getting Sebarton analog filter.

1) I found Nuendo 8 I/O for a good price, but I have no idea what are the differences between the stock RME ADI-8 and this ones. Does the converter unit have to have Adat in or Adat out to work with Digi 001 or both? What I'm trying to do is take 16 outs from my Digi 001 into Midas Venice for a final 2-Bus mix and from Midas main outs back into Digi 001 through the better converters, not Digi's. So will this unit work well with Digi 001?

2) What are other converters in the $1000 price range which give me 8 outs I should look into. Anyone used Swissonic stuff, if so how do they compare?

Cheers

Alesis is crap sounding and waste of money in my opinion, the other two are mic pres, and I need clean AD/DA nothing else. Any other ideas?

The Nuendo is just a rebranded RME box. No differences but the paint.

Frontier's Tango is a step up from the Ai3, but not quite up to where the RME stuff is...both in terms of quality and price. Certainly an improvement over the 001.

If analog A/D-D/A quality is such an issue, any particular reason you're going for the 001 and not the 002 rack?

Digi 002 rack is only for OSX, I'm still in OS9 and will be for another year till I see the bugs issues are worked out, but with Panther I'm guessing more problems will come out. Plus for the money that goes on 002 I can get used 001 for $500 US and Nuendo 8 I/O for $650 that's a much better set up at almost the same price as 002. So I'll go with Nuendo 8 I/O then.

Cheers

P.S. Has anybody tried to modify the 001 stock converters? If so who did the work for you, what are the results and how much did you pay?

I have read many posts here regarding upgrading the Digi001 converters and on R.A.P.. No one has seem to done it or see it very possible. You will notice a improvement of the Digi001 converters with just a better clock. Maybe check with Jim Williams at Audio Upgrades in Van Nuys, Ca. He mods out all types of equipment (pre's, mics, converters) and I have read he does some great things to the RME.

Yes a good clock was gonna be my next jump as well, but the prices for good clocks are high, I was looking at high end clocks like Rosendahl or Ardsync II. Do you have a link to his website, is this the same guy who does mods for mostly mixing consoles like Tac, Amek, Trident....?

Look into the Ramsa WZ-DA96. A few places still have them on the web for around $800. I paid $600 for mine and my WZ -AD96. these were over $2000 last year from Panasonic. But they closed down their Pro Audio division or something like that. So you can find them fora great deal out there now. I have not compared them to RME myself, but have read on this forum and on R.A.P. that they compare favorably better then the RME converters. I can't believe how much better everything sounds even old tracks recorded alone with the Digi001 using the AD96's clock.

Well I got a reply from RME today stating that Nuendo 8 I/O is the exact same unit as ADI-8, plus I found a guy who will either sell or trade his 8 I/O for my Motu 1224 which works out much better for me. I used to have Digi PST card long time a go, and from what I remember I really liked how it sounded ( better then Motu 1224), so this will be even more of a step up for me. I doubt that I can find Panasonic here in Toronto to addition it, so I'd rather go with something that is familiar to me. Now my next quest will be to see if the stock 001 converters can be modified.

Cheers

P.S. Is there a switch which changes the 3-8 outs from -10db to +4db?
