Default Increased Marker Count in 2022.9

I've always wanted to use 1000 Markers but never could because silly Pro Tools limits that to 999. Now, I'm free to put markers wherever I want (All Willy Nilly) and be OK. It only takes 0.00257 CPU power to have 32,000 markers. I think my computer can handle that.

Who's in these upgrade meetings saying, we really gotta get the markers upgraded ASAP. I know we need to get the M1 compatibility upgraded ASAP but, the Markers have to come first! (I'd be like "Who's Mans Is This? Wwwwhhhhhhhoooo's Mans Is This?)

I can't tell to what extent you're being sarcastic. A lot of people working in various specializations have been clamouring for an increase to the marker limit for a long time. I was hoping for more marker tracks or marker playlists but this is a nice start.

On another topic, the What's New doc states that Aux I/O is not supported on Classic HDX so I suppose Source Nexus will stay relevant for at least a small subset of users.

I know exactly how that meeting conversation went!

A: What do the music users want?

B: They want ARA2 integration so they can more efficiently tune awful performances.

A: But what do the post users want?

B: They just want more markers, so that in amongst all of the foley, fx, loop groups, scenes, music cues that have been marked, they can give their ADR lines markers with a numerical value that makes more logical sense, and is easier to remember and find when they get their talent back in to rerecord lines with more appropriate performances.

A: Why can't the music users do that?

B: ...

A: No, but really?

B: ...

A: Ok then. Who wants Apple Silicon support?

B: Mostly the music people.

A: ...

Default 2022.9 is here!

For some reason, this bit below didn’t find its way into the announcement on the DUC. I spotted this on the one posted on Gearspace. (Note the last sentence.)

32,000 MARKERS

Why 32,000? Why not? We know that for some people, 999 just isn’t quite enough. 32,000 happened to be the closest to infinite that we could get without having to do extra coding. Hopefully a little work in the marker area can serve as foreshadowing for things to come.

Probably due to the data type used in holding the array of markers. 2 to the power of 15 is 32768.

Yes. The most famous example of this was a bug in Tetris where once you reached 32768 points the score went negative and started to count towards zero.

This is however practically unlimited. It means that for a 3 hour film you can use three markers every second. I would actually want to see such a session...

It probably isn’t as unlimited as you think though. Post use a lot of markers. The numerical value can be just as handy to navigate them all, as the sheer quantity. As an arbitrary example, if you had between 1 and 70 markers per scene. Marker 100 to 199 could be shorthand for scene 1, marker 1 through 99. You won’t necessarily use them all, but you’ll have a much easier time navigating them.

An increasing number of places use super sessions now too. You don’t just mix in reels. You have 10 full one hour episodes of an entire Netflix season on the same timeline. Toss in your markers for track visibility, timeline selections for print masters, etc… and it is a lot of markers.

Infinite really is the ideal number, even if you don’t use infinite. You might only use 10,000 but being able to number them beyond 100,000 may well prove useful.

Wow, I genuinely had no idea. I can see why, must be very useful to grab elements used in the same scenes etc. If Pro Tools were able to switch between projects quickly and seamlessly and you could copy between them, it would probably make life easier.

Great idea, but this is wishful thinking, unfortunately. This would only work if you could set or renumber the marker number. But we can only set the maker name. Still an improvement, I ran into the 999 limit on the last 2,5hr doc, too. The Avid blog post says "Hopefully a little work in the marker area can serve as foreshadowing for things to come." So, let's wait another 10 years...

Really? No problem setting marker numbers here.
