Default Vista Home Premium

So I purchased a new computer that came with Vista Home Premium. I know that Vista Ultimate is the recommended OS to use when using Vista with Pro Tools LE, but I would prefer to not have to upgrade for almost $200 just to get LE working with Home Premium.

I'm wondering if anyone has been able to get LE working on a system running Vista Home Premium. Every time I try and run LE 7.4 cs7, it gives me the following error "Pro Tools Application has stopped working".

I've tried a number of suggestions such as Disabling DEP, Disabling UAC, and running the application as an Administrator. Nothing seems to work.

This install of Pro Tools came from the 7.3 LE to 7.4 LE upgrade file. Somehow I doubt that is the cause, but if I could install 7.3 on Vista I would do that, but of course it won't let me since it requires XP.

Do I need to buy a "full" version of Pro Tools 7.4 LE, or do I need to upgrade my copy of Vista Home Premium to Vista Ultimate? Or perhaps there is something that I haven't tried yet.

Thanks,

CCH

it really should run on your version of vista just fine. What ever the problem is probably not related to your version. I would do a clean uninstall of PT install the latest pace and iLok drivers and then reinstall 7.4 and then 7.4cs7.

Here is the link to the Vista optimization page:
http://www.digidesign.com/index.cfm?...0&itemid=28469

And here is the link for the compatibility of 7.4 desktop PC's
http://www.digidesign.com/index.cfm?...5&itemid=28565

I have a Dell laptop computer that I have running Vista Home Premium and 7.4 just fine. Follow the optimizations page instructions and see if that helps. I also have a desktop Dell XPS 420 running Vista Ultimate and I don't notice any difference other than my desktop has more processing power.

You may want to post a Sandra report and have the computer tech guys here on the DUC check out your system to make sure PT will even work on your computer. PT is a bit picky. I would actually recomend doing this first so your not wasting your time and getting frustrated.

So I've tried the optimization recommendations from the support site, I've also disabled onboard audio. I've also done a clean install of Pro Tools and all related drivers including PACE Ilok drivers. I wasn't able to find any DAE prefs or Digidesign Databases to delete because the program launch isn't even getting that far. I get an immediate "Pro Tools Application has stopped working" error. When that happens and I cancel the dialog which says something about Windows trying to find a solution, I get the following error window titled "ProTools.Exe - Application Error". "The application failed to initialize properly (0x80000003). Click OK to terminate the application."

I've installed all the latest bios updates and drivers for the motherboard from the Asus website. I've also disconnected any non-essential peripherals.

Here is a system report that I got from the PC Wizard Utility, if that helps.

***** End of report *****

Not sure if that information will help anyone.

Interestingly enough, I was able to use my 002 rack with my copy of Absynth 4 via the ASIO driver, so I know that the computer is communicating with the 002 rack.

I'm going to keep trying for now to get Pro Tools LE working. Any advice is welcome.

Hopefully the system specs will shed some light on the problem. By the way, I couldn't find out where to get the Sandra software for a Sandra report.

I'm sorry, I'm not much of a computer expert. So I personally won't be able to help you much from here. Hopefully one of the computer savy fellas on here will be some help to you. Good luck though.

Angry Re: Vista Home Premium

I finally got LE 7.4 working. Here's how I did it. I erased Vista, installed Windows XP and now everything works as it should. I've given up on trying to make LE work under Vista Home Premium.

I tried everything and then some in the hopes that Vista Home Premium would work. But having to disable font smoothing on a Quad core is a ridiculous exercise, along with the other system/OS gimping recos that the troubleshooting suggests. I felt like I was back in the days of OS9 on the Mac, changing fonts and shuffling extensions, etc...

I hope that one day Pro Tools LE, Vista Home Premium, and my hardware will work together. Judging from the sticky regarding Vista beta testing, there may be hope after all. I really liked the new Vista interface, and I hope that my investment in Home Premium wasn't a total waste of money.

Thanks to everyone for their advice. It seems like the best medicine for me is Windows XP. Now to embark on a full weekend of application reinstalls. Yay.
