Default Timing issue

I am running PT 10.0.1 and have an issue with timing that I don't understand.

When I set up a new session and change the tempo to record at 140 or 145 bpm instead of the standard 120, I always seem to come in at about quarter of a beat late. I follow the click track but for some reason it doesn't quite equate to the beats on the track.

Any idea why? I change the tempo by turning off the conductor and clicking on the tempo in the control strip and manually change it by keyboard.

Thanks

Algy

Hi,

What O/S? What interface? What plugins are you using?

Hey,

So one thing you need to realize when recording with pro tools is that your buffer setting can make a huge difference when you are playing, in your case its playing back a click track. With a buffer that is set to a longer sample rate you are creating more of a delay.... Most interfaces can be set to use a small enough buffer to not notice the latency (delay time it takes to process the incoming audio to digital/mixing and summing/converting to analog to hear it) if you can lower your buffer as low as you can without having problems (clicks, pops, stopped record or playback) and see if it fixes you issue.

You can also set PT to auto quantize your MIDI to grid (time signature/bpm) if that will help... Let me know if you want to know how to enable and set that.

Actually Pro Tools will compensate for the latency caused by the buffer setting, but it could be, like you said, due to monitoring with high buffer settings while playing as it can mess up your timing. You would notice it immediately as it's ridiculous to try to play with your live performance delayed past a certain point - about a 128 buffer setting or higher and you really start to notice it.

Default Re: Timing issue

I will look at the buffer issues and see how I go.

Thanks for the advice.
