Right Wild Honey. if he thinks reducing the volume affects his dynamic range, then he didn't read my long post about levels very carefully.

If you trim it down -12db, your range is now -62dBFS to -13dBFS; still 49db of dynamic range.
The dynamic range of 24bit audio is 144dB. If you trim level down you loose information in the lower part of that range. I will agree that loosing some of that can be ignored, because noise level is always far higher than -144dBFS.

Of course if you talk about dynamic range in musical terms, as a difference between the loudest and the quietest parts of an instrument, you are absolutely right. I am talking about this definition of dynamic range:

Jacek, please reread my post about levels. Your signal has noise in it that is above the noise int he system. This is what you're missing. The dynamic range wont change if you trim 12db.

I already said that in one of my previous posts, so I can't agree with you more :)

From PT manual: Green indicates nominal levels; Yellow indicates pre-clipping. Where do they say you should run everything at pre-clipping levels?

Green indicates nominal levels; Yellow indicates pre-clipping (–6 dB below full scale); and Red indicates clipping.

yellow in ProTools 9 is 12dB below full scale, not 6dB

Hit out at Dave Pensado. This guy must be completely hopeless to some of you!

He doesn't have this mysterious hidden clipping, he's got the visible one!
