I don't think that Avid helped their reputation much when they didn't give away Heat to all their PTHD customers a few months back. Most hardware owners probably had a Heat license for some time now, so giving it away to the rest of the HD community would've at least been a symbolic gesture of goodwill, if anything. Instead, their half-baked "generosity" with HD native users ended up looking like a really chintzy move.

Avid could've helped their finances too had they instead given that option to buy into Heat to Vanilla users. By sheer numbers alone Vanilla was clearly the better untapped market for which they could've pursued with Heat.
