Default CPU overload

Hey guys ive been getting CPU overloads on my system, even with my CPU not peaking over 25%

i suspect my hard drives might be too slow?

SSD for osx yosemite
SATA 5800 rpm disk for sessions

mac pro 3.1 8-core
20gb ram

7200 RPM session drives are needed for Pro Tools to be at it's happiest.

I get the same issue all the time with Mac OS. The best I can figure is that it's an OS process taking preference and this is killing playback. Other times I get this out is the video engine trying to push out Pro rez. With that, I have been converting all video files to DNxHD.

Make sure all your plugins are up to date.

Most important for cpu usage stability, I think, is to set PT to use less than max number of cores. I find my mac pro 3.1 quad core is happiest with HW setup set to use just two cores.

Most probable cause is a badly behaving plugin

72000 rpm Seagate barracuda. RAID 0.
