Default 25 seconds for save a session with virtual insert

Hello there,

I’ve a strange behavior on Pro tools ultimate on a Mac Studio 32Gb of Ram: a virtual instrument session with 4 East West Opus in multi channel mode. Symphonic Orchestra setup.
I had the “spinning wheel of death” for 25 seconds and after some anxiety I released that this happens during the save and auto-save procedure.
The system usage window shows that all is in the confort zone: memory 35%, CPU very low and the Disk (a very fast NVMe 2Gb/sec via thunderbolt) always at zero, even during the saving procedure.
I’ve tried to preload the samples in various way but nothing happens.
I’ve moved the session on the internal disk: the problem is exactly the same, 25 sec. for saving.
I’ve the same virtual instrument setup on a Sibelius score and the save is instantaneous.
With a session audio-only everything works flawlessly.

Mac M1 Max, 32gb RAM, Sandisk extreme pro, Monterey 12.4
Opus don’t needs Rosetta.

Thanks, cheers

Hi, Is it just that one session or does it happen in other sessions or a new session with only that plugin in use?

New empty sessions or with only audio tracks works fine.
New sessions with Opus have this issue. With one instance few seconds, with two 10 seconds and so on, with four: 25 seconds.

Hi there,
Even though Opus runs natively on Apple Silicon, it still requires Rosetta 2 (Intel) support to run as an AAX plug-in within Pro Tools.
Perhaps that code is creating some sort of bottle neck.
Maybe reach out to EW tech. support?

It’s been a while since I’ve used EW VIs but one of the reasons I gave up was that saving and auto-saving in Pro Tools took so long. Obviously Pro Tools saves the status of any instantiated plug-in and VI whenever it auto saves. Maybe they’ve still not fixed this?

Once possible solution is to use EW in Vienna Ensemble Pro in “decoupled” mode.
