Default PT won't import .AIFF files

I've been using for PT for 20 years, and have never encountered this problem before. I'm trying to import an AIFF file (actually, AIFF-C) into a session. I've done this thousands of times before, using the same AIFF files. The session (or indeed, any session) will not recognise any AIFF file nor import it. Is there something I may have inadvertently done? A preference? Something deep in the architecture?
