Default Re: Best Laptops for PTLE

I'm in the market for a new laptop and I'm considering going down the route of getting one of the top specced gaming machines... like an alienware system. It works out hella expensive but I can justify the expense.

do you guys think one of these systems would work well for protools? its like (off the top of my head) intel extreme quad core processor, 4 gig ram.

The only reason i ask is that these systems are aimed at gamers. are they better than than the "off the shelf" laptop option for protools le?

thanks

I'm running in lots of FW errors with it though since pt 8 but otherwise it's a killer machine, Alienware's are clevo barebones re-branded by resellers. Check this out Clevo Guide before buying one, as they have lots of different names but in the end are the same, prices are almost the same as well (competitive) regards

Just my 2 cents here, but you should consider buying an extra internal hard drive for your laptop and loading Windows XP on it and using it only when you record. You'll need an external hard drive to record. You shouldn't/can't record to the internal primary drive where protools is loaded. If you want to follow a similiar path that I've taken wit my M440 go here for more info: http://duc.digidesign.com/showthread...76139&page=229

I was not able to get PT 8 to run properly using Vista on my Dell M4400. I had to install XP Pro on a hard drive and I use it specifically for recording to my external drive.

Check out my link in the above post. If you're using Vista on your Dell laptop that could be the issue. I believe other folks have had success running PT 8 under Vista, but I have not been able to do that on my M4400. If you are set on using the Dell to run PT 8 and the Rack 003 then I suggest you purchase a new internal hard drive then load Windows XP Pro and XP Service Pack 3 on it then install ProTools LE 8. Use the Ricoh drivers that come in XP, not the Dell supplied Ricoh drivers as I'm convinced there is a problem with the Dell supplied Ricoh Firewire drivers. Make sure you have an external hard drive to record your audio files. That's how I was able to record successfully with my M4400.
