Keyboard Shortcuts on a MacBook Pro (no numerical pad)?

Hi,

Anyone know of any keyboard shortcuts that can be used to replace the Command+(numerical keypad number) shortcuts in the absence of a numerical keypad on a Mac laptop? I know I can turn on Num Lock but turning that on and back off constantly is not practical and not good for workflow. Additionally, the USB numerical keypad I have doesn't work with any other keys like Command, Option, etc.

And similar question for F1, F2, F3 etc keys to change between Edit modes: On a MacBook Pro these keys do things like adjust brightness of the screen, so and so forth. How can I get around this?

System Prefs> Keyboard & Mouse> there should be a check box for Function Keys as legacy or something to that effect

Thanks Craig for the reply. I'll try that. Wish there was some software out there that is like a keyboard emulation-type app that would let you say, when I'm in this particular program (Pro Tools for instance) this key should emulate this key (and support for a numeric keypad would be included). Then when I'm not in that program, default Mac key commands.

If I have to cut on my laptop, I always plug in a full size keyboard for this very reason. Can't live without the proper numeric keypad!
