We all seem to agree the licensing is a mess.

We are very proud of it. Did you know that in Finland there are more saunas than cars per capita?

Back to the point (and do not shoot the messenger) things will be much simpler once Avid stops selling licenses and goes subscription only. To my knowledge it takes a minimum of five years transition after final license sale, after which it may not be possible to renew the support plan. However oif someone buys 100 years worth of renewals, Avid is obliged to honor the past sales.

I really hope this won’t happen!

Thanks Ben Jenssen. avid 3rd party approved sellers can sell that upgrade like guitar center. So this definitely answers my question. Not for long I suppose as avid itself offers nothing like this anymore. Tricky subscriptions. I know this isn't the place but its just like the world global elites want it. you will own nothing... and you will be happy lol. Thanks again for your knowledge!

On April 26, 2022, Avid stopped selling new perpetual licenses for Pro Tools. However, if you currently own a perpetual license, then your license is not affected by this. Not at all.

Owning a perpetual license means exactly that – you own it. We take that very seriously. Your Pro Tools perpetual license is yours in perpetuity. Avid is not secretly changing it to a subscription, nor “coming to take away your license”, nor hindering you from accessing your perpetual license in any way.

In addition, Avid did not stop supporting existing perpetual licenses. Support for your license did not stop, and is continuing.

If you have any questions about your own particular situation, we’re happy to help. Ask us questions in the comments below. We'll do our best to answer them as quickly as possible. Or if you have a very specific issue with a license, please consider opening a Support Case [HERE].

If you're still not quite sure what this all means, and are looking for some general info about Pro Tools licensing, go [HERE].

Thanks everyone for your time.
So, perpetual doesn't mean perpetual anymore ?
Did you guys mean perpetual rent since the beginning but were just messing with our heads?
I'm very confused and frustrated about this.
The perpetual license wasn't cheap either.

Perpetual license is perpetual. Forever. Not expiring. What else?

Support around the license is a moving target. Renewal? Reinstatement? No reinstatement? Hopefully long term rules are set in stone soon enough.

I don't know how you get that from Chris' post. He specifically rules out perpetual not being perpetual any more in the sentence after the one you boldened.

I have some sympathy because the whole area of subs / support is confusing and Avid move the goalposts twice a year. But in no world has it ever been the case that perpetual licenses will stop being perpetual.
