Pro Tools Read/Write Disk

Hey Gang. I'm optimizing my system here and I hear its a solid idea to keep PT and Plug Ins native on your system while using an external drive for your Read/Write.

It seems to me that there would be some sort of latency issue with this, anyone want to weigh in?

my system is a 2011 iMac OSX 10.8.1, 3.1 GHz i5 with 8 GB of RAM and a Radeon HD 6xxx series with a Gig on it.

My Macbook Pro is the 2012 version (non retina) with higher end hardware than the iMac.

that is the proper way to work with Pro Tools
app and plugs on the system drive and the session and audio files on an external drive

i seriously doubt there's much latency at all, considering how fast the bus is now adays... i've always ran a 2nd drive for audio files... some times even on esata when on the laptop... no issues...

eSATA will yield performance equal to an internal SATA recording drive. If you have a Thunderbolt port, a TB drive would be the next best(probably equal, but more expensive). If you check youtube, you can see how to replace the iMac optical drive with a second internal drive(great for recording if you don't NEED a portable drive). Optical drives on USB work fine(for me anyway). FW is at the bottom end of the performance ladder(USB is not supported on Macs at all).
