Default NAB Post Audio News

Hi Guys,

Some exciting announcements and news at NAB this year... particularly one regarding a enhanced partnership with Dolby for more streamlined and integrated Atmos mixing in the Pro Tools HD family.

Here's a summary of what we are showing and talking about in my blog:

Hope to see you at the show...
Tom

Atmos integration is nice. But it would be even nicer to also have an Auro - or any other multichannel setup - option.

9.1 buses and outputs is a nice touch. I don't have a preference for Auro3D or Atmos - in fact I think it's nice to have someone challenge Dolby's dominance, however with Atmos now requiring less plug-ins, I wonder if this will make things harder for Auro3D.

If they're going to rework the bussing and panner to support these higher formats and object metadata, I hope they also take the opportunity to add some more advanced panning capabilities; like those found in Spanner and on the System 5.

If the bussing and output system gets reworked, why limit yourself to 9.1? It's very likely we are heading towards a more open format with game and cinema sound, where mixers can choose the best sounding format and speaker layout for the project, not the one format that's dictated by a single company. With Auro adding object-based mixing, it will become a sonically superior format than Atmos anyway, so adding 11.1 / 13.1 busses now would be a very smart move.
