Upgrade to PT 10 now and free PT 11 later?

I just ordered and received a PT10 upgrade Activation card for my PT9 native license.

I purchased it now with the intent of upgrading to PT11 when it becomes available. I plan to make use of the purchase PT10 after April 7 offer.

How, or will, I be informed of the availability of PT 11?

Do I find a place to get on a list? Will it be automatic?

Should I go ahead and Activate the PT10 license?

I have a brand new DAW I am setting up for the next few years and I think I'd like to wait and just install PT11 when it becomes available. I don't want to clutter it with old installs.


PT 9 is ok on my current DAW so I don't have an imminent need for the PT10... I just want to make sure I remain eligible for the PT11 package that I have been hoping for since PT9 came out.

I'd go ahead and get your PT10 registered and up and running now - you did buy the upgrade after the April announcement date so you should be cool there. As to being notified of the release of PT11 I'm guessing Avid will send out blast emails to everyone on their mailing list as long as you allow them to send you emails. You could also check in here on the DUC after you're done with Strummy and the gang over on the Sonar forums (ex Sonarite here - was on the forums under a different screen name)

It might be worth checking out some of the other threads to confirm, but from what I understand others to have said, when you register PT10 with Avid, you'll find you get a bundled PT10 + PT11 licence set in your iLk account.

I just registered my copy of Pro Tools 10 that came out with my purchase of the eleven rack and the avid support told me I will receive an email informing me that I am entitled to a free upgrade to Pro Tools 11 once it is out.

The PT packs that come with a current Eleven Rack (or Mbox 3 Pro) generate an 11/10 bundle license instantly.

Interesting, this different experience.

EJ, were you registering a new PT10? As opposed to DJ, who was registering a PT9 to PT10 upgrade? Maybe that's the difference?

The only other difference is geographic location ... I can't see that affecting how licences come out.

He said he registered a PT 10 that came with an Eleven Rack.
Maybe he had an old stock ER.
Fact is that new ER's come with non version specific PT packs, as do Mbox 3 Pros

I'd say register your PT10 upgrade with Avid now (it's unlikely, but you never know if something funky is going to happen after PT11 is officially released).

That's all you need to do at this stage, as it will deposit a PT10/11 "Bundle" license in your iLok account. So long as you don't sync your iLok to your account, you can carry on using PT9 without surrendering the license, and having to install PT10.

I was in pretty much the same boat as you. In the end I wrapped up the project I was on (having already registered the PT10 upgrade), synched the iLok and made the switch to 10.3.5.

My only regret is not upgrading to PT10 the day it was released.
