ok, found this in answerbase:

"Privileged Instruction executed in user mode" error when attempting to bounce or export to MP3 with Medium or High quality encoding speed.

This is a known issue with Pro Tools/Pro Tools LE 6.1, 6.1.1.

anyone know of a workaround or fix?
thanks!

Hi!
Using mp3 as the format when bouncing to disk, I have used the set-rate option, and simply changed ONLY the rate. I leave the "quality" parameter at the default, which is medium quality I believe. No problems with doing it in this manner so far for me.

Alternately, and albeit annoyingly, a workaround I use occasionally- I use CDex.
Normally, I like to BTD to wav, so as to have a nice hi res render. Instead of doing a second bounce for mp3, I will use CDex to do the conversion, since it takes significantly less time than sitting through ANOTHER bounce just for a different format. CDex is free btw There are other solutions as well of course
