I totally believe you understand all this, I am pointing out it is not the clearest way to explain it.

Darryl I think because of your level of expertise you may personally be reading in too much inference into the word "separate" yes the actual difference is just position and labeling on the back of the unit , --- But I don't think there is an inference beyond the fact that main out connectors on the back of the unit are labeled and positioned distinctly from the line out section. Which is (I think) what the OP was stating as to why he was confused

which I don't understand, as monitor L-R is clearly an entirely separate, dedicated output on the presonus.

I get that you are saying it is not really entirely "separate" or "dedicated' and that it is just two more line level outputs ... But I think (and I could be wrong) that the OP is not referring to it being a dedicated internal section. I think he is simply referring to the Main Outs L-R being in a different position and labeled different than the 8 other connections labeled line out --- Maybe he will reply and clear up his meaning
So I could be wrong, but I doubt the op or others are going to read in that I am inferring some additional internal technical difference beyond just the connection position and label.
BTW My saying you may be reading in too much is actually in a round about way a complement to your level knowledge. In any case hopefully the OP will get my post
