Default PT compatible video card recommendations please.

we are compiling a kit list for our new HD system, and wondered if anyone is using a different video system to the Avid XL option, which seems rather costly, and a bit of overkill for our needs.

The system will be used mainly for foley recording, and so will need to output a Pal signal to two screens - one in the booth and one for the control room.

Or would i be okay running just a quicktime movie and duplicating the control room monitor on another screen in the booth? (i use this method at the moment on my digital Performer setup and it seems to work although the QT movie size is not huge!)

i'd appreciate your thoughts, as we don't have a bottomless money pit!

Igniter. You could split the video feed or use a video distribution amp to split the signal to two monitors. We just Y it and it seems to look fine but the amp is the proper way to do it.
Igniter ~$1000 Horita DA ~$230

Radeon 9800. Send one feed to the computer monitor, send the S-VHS output to your control room TV and run a composite split from that to your studio monitor. Works well, scrubs in sync. Can't capture, though. Igniter card mentioned above is probably also a good choice, but puts the video back on the PCI bus. The Radeon replaces the internal graphics card, and doesn't take up a PCI slot.

That Radeon 9800 sounds nice, but is that the mac version? I had a look on the apple and ATI website at the 9800 and there is no mention of a SVHS output on it.

well you've all convinced me that the avid option is not an option for us at all !!

I'll stick with what I have on my motu set-up - which is a Geforce 4ti 128mb - its comparable with the cards mentioned, and as it ain't broke.....

thanks

Here's the link to the Radeon 9800 spec sheet. Radeon 9800

THe SVHS port is listed in the specifications page for the Mac. I have been using the 8500 (now discontinued). However, please note the 9800 only works in OSX, so if you are still using OS9.2 it won't work.

Thanks for that, i didn't look at the 'pro' model. It doesn't have a ADC interface but has a VGA instead which is a shame and it is only AGP4X rather than 8X. Aside from that it looks great, i might get one. Thanks for the heads up.

What's wrong with the DC30+??? You can find 'em here in the DUC or on eBay for under $100 and it's fully compatible (though not DIGI supported) with PT 6.x.x (PAL & NTSC)! We use 'em in all our edit rooms and mix stages. The OS X drivers are FREE!
