Default Side-Chain? Help me make my low end thump!

i am curious as to how you side-chain the kick drum with the bass.....
what do i need to do? is it compression?
what other tricks are used in sidechains?

Bus the kick, call up a compressor on the bass guitar track. Where it says "No Key Input" click and choose the bus you channeled the kick through. Then click the key icon on the compressor. This will trigger gain reduction on the bass guitar every time there is a beat on the kick (as long as the threshold is set low enough).

You'll have to play with the settings until you get it sounding the way you want.
