Volume Controls have stopped working...
I'm using a nubus version of SampleCell in an older Mac, and for some reason it's stopped responding to any volume changes I make in the SampleCell Editor. Everything else seems to work fine, tuning, panning, etc. It's just the volume control that's gone out.
Is there something I can reset to get it to recognise the input, or is this simply a hardware problem? Anybody else ever had this happen? ------------------ www.hugheshall.com www.mp3.com/hugheshall |

Re: Volume Controls have stopped working...
If you mean that instruments are not responding to MIDI Volume, make sure that "Disable MIDI Volume & Pan" is not checked in the instrument's Misc Parameters window.
If its the volume fader on the instrument, then I'd start by trashing the SampleCell prefs, then reinstalling the SampleCell Editor. Does this happen on all instruments/banks? Does the card pass the internal tests (SampleCell/Test SampleCell)? ------------------ Jeff Cohen Digidesign Tech Support

Re: Volume Controls have stopped working...
Hi Jeff,
Thanks for your speedy response! I tried everything you suggested with no success. If its the volume fader on the instrument, then I'd start by trashing the SampleCell prefs, then reinstalling the SampleCell Editor. I threw out the SampleCell Prefs, but I also noticed two files named "SampleCell II 1 MIF" and "SampleCell II 2 MIF", presumably one file for each of the cards I have installed. Do I need to flush these out also? Does this happen on all instruments/banks? Yes, and on both SampleCell cards. Does the card pass the internal tests (SampleCell/Test SampleCell)? Yes, all of them including DRAM test. I also noticed that when I pan an instrument it only jumps hard left or right at the extreme pan setting (either -99, or +99) with no change in between. This is similar to the volume problem in that when I move the instrument fader down to -48 the sound cuts out, but stays up full until then. Fortunately the tuning function within the sample-map window works fine. Here's my setup: Mac IIci 20 Megs Ram Sys. 7.5.5 32 bit enabled SampleCell software V. 2.01 2 Cards with 33 Megs each Thanks for any light you can shed on this! Re: Volume Controls have stopped working...
Yes trash those "SampleCell II 1 MIF" and "SampleCell II 2 MIF" files as well. I don't suppose the newer version of Samplecell Editor works on the older macs..does it?

Re: Volume Controls have stopped working...
The MIFs are Memory Image Files, which are prefs that will be created by the app so they can be safely trashed.
Is this new behavior, or has it always done this? Does the Sample Volume and Pan work? Open the Sample Map window and double click on a sample (above the keyboard). Sorry I don't have a solution (yet) for you. I've been here longer than SampleCell and can't remember this symptom ever being reported! It sounds like a hardware problem, but you said it's the same on both cards so that's unlikely. ------------------ Jeff Cohen Digidesign Tech Support

I tossed them but it didn't make any difference. Is this new behavior, or has it always done this? Seems like it's been a few years, and it happens on both cards which leads me to believe that it's software based. Does the Sample Volume and Pan work? Open the Sample Map window and double click on a sample (above the keyboard). No unfortunately. Sorry I don't have a solution (yet) for you. Yeah it's really wierd. It was intermittent for a while; some instruments would have pan and volume while others right next to them in the bank wouldn't. Now it seems to be universal. Thanks though for any suggestions. ------------------ www.hugheshall.com www.mp3.com/hugheshall |
