Default PTLE8 Vanishes on Launch

Dear DUC,

Thanks in advance for your help. I've been using Pro Tools at my college for a few years now, and am now trying to get PT8 up and running on my own personal system. The Sandra report is included at the bottom.

The problem: Clicking on the PTLE desktop icon brings up the Pro Tools splash screen for about four seconds, then the splash screen disappears, leaving no indication that I ever tried to launch the program.

The backstory: I purchased a boxed version of PTLE8, and the installation hangs the first two times I try to install it. The third install goes well. (I tried installing a different copy of PTLE8, to see if I got a bad disc, and the problem is exactly the same.) I then fire up Pro Tools, and get the aforementioned 'vanishing act.' I uninstall, reinstall, and get the same 'install hangup/vanishing act.' (Always, the install goes through on the third try, the first two I have to end using the task manager.)

As you'll see in the Sandra report, I'm using an Acer Aspire 5100 laptop running 4G of RAM with Windows Vista Home Premium. I am using PTLE8 and an original Mbox - the Mbox has been tested on a friend's Mac and works fine.

I know Digi says that 'all Acer dual-core laptops' are incompatible with Pro Tools, but Digi doesn't explain why, except that the AMD Turion processor doesn't play with Pro Tools. However, http://duc.digidesign.com/showthread.php?t=224370 is a thread regarding Pro Tools and Acer laptops, and http://duc.digidesign.com/showthread.php?t=238002 is a thread regarding the AMD chip.

It seems like the AMD chip can cause PT to run 'buggy,' but that doesn't explain why it doesn't launch at all.

As far as troubleshooting steps I've taken . . . you name it. I've run through the optimization of Vista for audio production as described in the general support thread. I've updated drivers for every component I can think of (graphics card, PACE drivers, updated Mbox firmware, AMD dual-core optimizer). I've downgraded from Internet Explorer 8 to IE7 (as, from what I read, IE8 seems to interfere with the launch of Pro Tools).

For comparison, I've also tried launching Pro Tools with/without all external drives connected. As stated, I've tried installing a different copy of PT8, and I've tested the Mbox on a Mac.

What's up, Digi users?

----------

SiSoftware Sandra

I don't think Vista Home Premium is considered "compatible" with PT. I know others have found a workaround, but if I were you, I'd use XP. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the quick reply.

PT8 is qualified for Vista Business and Ultimate. Digi says that they have not extensively tested Home Premium, but have not gotten user complaints. Also, I've read that the AMD Turion processors were initially listed as 'uncompatible' because of their performance with XP.

Just curious..you aren't running Internet Explorer 8 are you????
Also see you're trying to use a USB external drive. While that may not be the root of
your problem, it WILL be a problem once you iron out the initial issue.
AND, are you trying to record to that partition on your internal drive? Also a big no, plus
a 5400 rpm drive won't suffice as an audio drive, it needs to be 7200.
Hope that at least gives you a starting point!!!

SW Rec,

I was running Internet Explorer 8. I then saw a post from Digi saying this was causing problems with PT launch. I have since followed Microsoft's steps to uninstall IE8 and revert to IE7. Still no luck.

I've heard of some instances of IE8 actually CORRUPTING PT installs. Maybe re-install Pro Tools???? Then address those drive issues.

And you have a Turion processor. In XP that was a non-starter, ie Pro Tools wouldn't work with one. There is at least one Vista user who claims to have Pro Tools working with his Turion. YMMV.

Cheers,

Hey guys,

I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling after reverting from Internet Explorer 8 to IE7. The program installs - sloowwwwwly. I restart, try to launch PT, and get . . . four seconds of splash screen.

What's up?

You have two major problems - you have an Acer dual-core laptop, which was specifically disqualified because of numerous problems trying to get Pro Tools to run on it, and you have on with a Turion processor, which is known to be incompatible with Pro Tools.

I'm sorry I don't have better news for you.
