Default virtual instruments not recording in Pro tools 8

Hi all,

I am new to Pro Tools so please excuse me if this is a very stupid question!!

I wanted to start playing about with MIDI. I don't yet have a MIDI controller so was trying out instruments. When I armed and started recording the notes do not record (I am playing using the mouse, instrument = Vacuum).

I can draw the notes in the midi editor and play them back.

What I am I doing wrong....?

Any help would be great.

Cheers,
Pro Tools 8.0.3
iMAC OSX 10.6.3
