Default Apogee PSX-100 & Lucid 9624. Which is better?

I have heard so many conflicting stories and opinions about these. Anyone have hard facts and interesting notes about these converters and their specs? People have said that Apogee psx-100 is great but so hyped and way overpriced just because Bob Clearmountain started using them back in the day. I've been told that the Lucid 9624's are amazing and only $1500.00 for both A/D & D/A converters.

I recently did a shootout between my delta 1010 converters and the lucid ad9624.

The lucid mostly got a nine rating even though it also got rated ten by one person.

It got a 9 cos its internal clock is good but not great. I get slightly better results when I clock with the lucid genx-6. WIth the gen-x6 and the ad9624, I get stellar sound.

the comparison mp3 is here

In order to have great digital, you need to have great analog. There are many converters out there today that are a lot less money than Apogee and claim to be as good. The problem is that from a technical point of view, they can't be unless they are built with the same quality components. I'm not saying that Lucid doens't make good sounding products but if you've ever listened to a PSX100 (and especially the PSX100SE!!!!) then there is nothing to argue. It's the analog design of Apogee that makes Apogee Apogee.... until someone else copies them component for component (and there is one company that I am sure could do that! haha)..... then Apogee is still the only choice for the best sound IMHO. With that said, you don't have to buy Apogee to get a great sounding converter.... but if you do make the investment in Apogee, you get more than your money's worth.

A trusted mastering engineer told me that the Lucid and Apogee have the same chip, except that the lucid uses better analog components.

I also started hearing on the web where people are not that impressed with the apogee sound.
I had an acquantaince who was not happy with the sound of his rosetta and so he switched to PARIS pro. He is much happier now

BUT. I agree with you. The psx100 will make a person happy, except that one can get that same quality or better for cheaper.
