It is indeed a bit overkill. It's not free but you could use PatchWork to do that too.

It is quite useful as a monitoring solution. You can use a similar setup when monitoring on headphones with a correction plug-in such as Re-Head, if you don't want the plug-in to sit on Pro Tools' master bus (which may be a problem if you forget to de-activate it before exporting a mix...).
