Understanding gain control...
I had to change pre-amp gains during a session to avoid clipping, and now I'm having trouble matching up my mix between before and after. It's just six channels, recording classical guitar - four channels going through a Red One and the other two using the Control 24 pre's.
Since the Control 24 doesn't have meaningful measurements at each increment, I figured I'd just run a test tone through a microphone and note the level difference between the two settings I used (the line below +60 for the most part, reducing it to the line below that). According to this test, the difference between the two lines was 5dB. If on playback, I increase the Red One levels by 6db (one notch) and the Ctrl 24 levels by 5 dB (according to my test), I figured I should get my mix back, but its not even close. So, how should I be going about doing this? Clearly, I have got the wrong idea... Does the test tone need to be at 0 for its loudest? Is there some other way for me to note the measurements around the gain knob?
