I used S1 v3 and v4 for a long time before moving to Logic and PT. There are endless DAW-wars on Gearspace etc so I'll keep my opinions short, and they're just that - opinions.

I had problems with:

1) Midi timing - record something and then play it back, just didn't sound right. No idea what was going wrong but no obvious solution.
2) sudden full-scale noise - as reported on a big thread on the forum - not good when I have 1.2kW of monitoring.
3) Forum is "community support" staffed by enthusiasts and people who won't hear a word said against the product, along with some dullards who always have the same solution for everything
4) developers are rude when they turn up on the forum and are focussed on new features rather than bug fixes

Good stuff:

1) Great UI. Slick, intuitive and fully drag and drop. If you don't mind the blue on blue scheme, it's really easy on the eye and the metering is good.
2) Lots of features.
3) Good value.

Other stuff:

1) Notion is a separate product for score editing and is horrendous.
2) Stock plugins behave differently with some major (and some minor) releases, so really hard to know if a mix saved today will work the same in the future.
3) Saved mix files will usually only open with the same or later versions of the product.

Things I like about PT in comparison.
1) Great music score (looks nice and sensible when converting midi to score). Better than Logic too IMHO.
2) Saved files work with multiple versions (forward and backward compatibility)
3) Forum has lots of professional users and pragmatic opinions. Plenty of die-hard PT users but not blind to shortfalls
4) Devs and product specialists from Avid are polite and constructive when they turn up.
5) PT metering is great. UI is clear, sensible and usable.
6) Loads of support for "stuff". Video, control surfaces, post, Atmos, the list is long.

I'm using regular Pro Tools/Windows 10/Intel 11th gen/buffer 64. Stable.

I tried the version 5 demo and I've kept in touch with updates.
Still no video engine, for example. Still no inbuilt score editor.
Will be interested to hear what your experience is, and also whether they've fixed the full scale noise issue, which has certainly persisted in various versions of 5.x - the latest notes claim a fix to "666 errors" associated with certain event boundaries, so if that is the problem fixed I will be very pleased.

I enjoy both Pro Tools Standard 2021.12 and Studio One Professional 5.5.0 for my limited DAW uses and needs. That being said, much of the enjoyment is due to the hardware, plugins and room I use, which is quite indifferent to which DAW I am using.

I use them both as well. Compose in S1, mix in PT. Much like I did years ago when it was compose in Logic, mix in PT. Just about anything handles VI's better (and more of them) than PT for me. It only takes a couple of instances of Omnisphere to bring PT to its knees. YMMV, of course.

The mac pro 71 works very well. Doesn't bog down using VIs.

And for what those cost, they shouldn't bog down. But my little iMac runs VI's just fine in Reaper, Ableton, Logic and S1 without spending that kind of money.

We all need to be honest. PT isn't built for VI's for a number of us users. I have hope for the new ARM systems once everything runs native.

Hmmmmm
In terms of being more expensive never any question

BUT to clarify S1 will cost me to upgrade from V4, and my annual PT Ultimate perpetual, with support/updates costs $399 not the $799 for a subscription
And S1 while getting better, still has a ways to go in terms mixing and editing audio.

Unfortunately for me personally the sad news IS---- I have two hardware units a Bricasti M7 reverb and an IGS Tubecore Mastering compressor which are integral in my work flow

AND S1's Pipeline plugin does no work with my Carbon interface ( after several e-mails with Presonus Support ) And they seemed unable to determine why or to give much effort And in the end they seemed willing to simply speculated it is the AVB ethernet connection for Carbon that is the problem and Presonus does not appear to be willing to address it at all .... So I am SOL
