Advice on how to mic a brass band
I need some advice on what to do to mic a brass band. My real problem is that they stand on stage when they play and tend to move around a lot. What would be the best way to mic them? The mics I have at my disposal are Neumann KM185s, Neumann TLM193s, Shure KSM44s, KSM32s, and KSM27s, and Shure SM81s. The band is only a 11 piece band with a sousaphone, 2 trombones, trumpet, alto, tenor, guitar, keyboard, snare, and bass drum.

Re: Advice on how to mic a brass band
I'd go with the Shure KSM32 or KSM44. I use the KSM32 here for timpani, brass, cello, and a few other instruments that have a big bottom. The KSM does a good job of capturing that live without embellishing the low end. They do have a fairly noticeable hot spot on-axis, but that is pretty normal with a large diaphragm condenser. I really like the KSM32 on brass. Don't have a KSM44.
