Default 001 vs 002

A friend of mine bought a 001 a while back. Since then he has come up with some great recordings and I am impressed with the 001 unit. My question to you all is: Is the 002 unit worth spending the extra cash on?? I have heard some recordings from a 001 and I think it will be hard to beat the quality...I realize you can do more on the 002...I am just looking for opinions and comments from 001 and 002 owners on the new technology.

Thanks for your time

Personally I think wtih the exception of the 96k compatibility, you can get a lot more with an 001 and add'l gear (lightpipe mic pre's, digital minimixer/control surface) that you can buy with the extra cash that what you get with the 002.

Hope this is helpful.

I started with the 001 Factory and I really like the 002 much better...It sounds better and the control over a session is great!...Nope, no regret upgrading here....Get one and see how long it takes your friend to want one too...

I would buy the 001, a good vocal mic and a preamp - if I had the cash. You know that regardless of what you buy 001/002 that sometime in the not too distant future you will change it out - the value of the 001/002 will be minimal by that time. But a good mic and preamp will likely hold the value. I'm not sure what your budget is but I suspect you might not be as financially strapped as me.

Moonmusic - Thanks for your input. What do you mean it sounds better? Is there that much of a difference in quality of sound? Did you upgrade any of your other equipment that you may be seeing benefits from?

Thank You all for your knowledge. I will be making a descision based on information from this forum.

What preamp is working good for you? What is the best deal ?

I have an 001 and love it. personally though, when I upgrade, I am skipping the 002 and going straight in the HD type systems. i dont want to upgrade incrementally.
If you are new to PT then the 002 may be the thing for you, but as an 001 user, I would rather skip that upgrade and take a larger step into a bigger world.

I currently use the 001 with a DA7 Digital mixer, it gives me a lot more than the 002 will give me. Apart from the control surface with mic pre's that comes with the 002, the software is exactly the same. There should be no sonic difference between both systems. You can get your sound as good as you want it or better, depending on how you record, and mix with protools. At the end of the day the decision between both systems depends on budget and compatibility. If you already have existing gear that can interface well with 001, then there's no need to buy 002. If you're starting out and have nothing, 002 is a good all-in-one package.
That's my 2 cents.

Here is the way I see it, so just consider what is most important to you. Keep in mind that I have never used 002, so anything i have to say about it came from stuff I read and other users - see Phil's review.

Sample rates:
002 up to 96k
001 up to 48k

A/D Conversion Quality:
On paper, 002 @ 48k is better than 001 @ 48k

I/O:
001 - 18(8 w/ 001 A/D/A, 10 with external A/D/A @ 48k)
002 - 18(8 w/ 002 A/D/A, 10 with external A/D/A @ 48k)
002 - 10(8w/ 002 A/D/A, 2 with external A/D/A @ 96k; ADAT I/O only operates up to 48k)
...now remember with the external A/D/A I/O, the conversion quality difference between 001 & 002 no longer comes into play - you can use much better converters for either the 001 or 002 if you have the $$$.

Controller:
002 - built in, motorized faders, etc...
001 - none, but with the money saved, you can get a Mackie Control (now or very soon to be compatible with HUI emulation), which some may consider to be better than the 002 surface.

Interface:
002 - Firewire - can easily plug in to a laptop or a desk top without opening the case. A little more latency than PCI, although I believe there is some kind of compensation for that, so latency really shouldn't be an issue.
001 - PCI - must open the case - can only use with desktops (unless you have a PCI expansion chassis connected to a laptop)

Mic pres
002 - 4 built in pres w/phantom power - supposedly better than 001 pres
001 - 2 built in pres w/phantom power

Other than musicianship what often stands out between a home/professional studio project is the outboard gear. It’s the reverbs, compressors, pre’s, etc. that one has access in a professional studion that you don’t normally have in a home studio. When making a comparison between 001 and 002 one needs to decide what you’re getting for the extra $1300 you’re paying for with the 002. You’re getting a mixer that alone would cost anywhere from $400 - $700. For the sake of argument let’s just say $500. That leaves about $800. With 001 for an extra $400 you can get the upgrade with the Dverb and I believe Bomb Factory plugins. However with the 002 you get a slew of great RTAS plugins that if purchased one at a time would be much more than the $800 balance we’re left with. The Amplitude plugin alone is incredible. Add to that rest of the plugins and I believe you’ll agree, dollar for dollar the 002 is the best investment. However, in the end the good news is that you can’t go wrong with either. You could get an 001 and add a 2-ch mic pre, but you'll still be using the 001's converters, unless you buy a better 2-ch A/D converter, more $$$$. Add a 3rd party control surface, more $$$, and I don't know much about the 3rd party Control Surfaces, but the 002 has / stereo-mono switch/alternate source routings/scribble pads/plug-ins flip switch---click this and you can control your plug-ins from the control surface/ ALL balanced ins and outs/ transport control/+4db, -10db switches/opt,shift,control,enter,command switches for short cuts/ HPF on the four built in mic-pres/bank-bank the 8 faders ,nudge-nudge 1 fader at a time,zoom-zoom in on the regions, use it as a mixer for band practice and a KILLER plug-in package!
I had a buddy who wanted a 001 too! He seen my 002 and as of last Tuesday, he's a proud owner of a 002!!
