Pro Tools 2018.10 (or .12) suddenly won't launch

This just started today and I can't find a solution so far.

Launch Pro Tools as normal, the splash screen gets to the point where it says "Initializing Library Content" and then boom...error dialog. Message as follows:

Could not complete your request because Assertion in "/Volumes/Development/223020/ProTools/AAE/Source/AAX/CFicAAXWidget.cpp", line 851.

The error started when I was on 2018.10, and since I see 2018.12 is a bug fix release I've tried installing that...same issue after install.

Mid-2012 Mac Pro, 3.33 GHz 6-core, 48 GB 133 MHz DDR3, 1 TB SSD boot volume (Samsung 850 EVO). 10.13.6 patched current.

Any and all help appreciated.

Note - I've removed any recently-installed plugins from the system (the only things I can think of are Harrison's AVA EQ and Waves Shell, but removing it from the plugin folder doesn't seem to have any impact, so that's probably not it)

Most common cause is having the wrong device selected as playback engine. Especially having an aggregate device that has no output or selecting say Built-In Input on a Mac as the playback engine.

Why Pro Tools does not detect issues like this and offer a user understandable error message is beyond me.

Not sure how it got switched back to Pro Tools Aggregate I/O, but that was the issue, sure enough. Held down 'N' to get the playback engine dialog, then reset it back to my Babyface Pro. That did the trick.

So Im also having the same issue with 2018.12. It crashes as the session is about to open.. I have deleted preferences, and also changed the playback engine to built-in-output before trying to open a session. Nothing is working.
