Default Clip gain???

I am doing post production for swedish television. Very often I get production audio that's been recorded at very low levels. I'm inserting the gain plug-in in Pro tools that will let me automate gain up to 12 db. I really don't like this way of working. In a typical session I will spend a lot of time changing the automation view to gain and drawing an envelope with the mouse. I used to gain the clip in Audiosuite but I found that even more tedious.

Could anyone give me some advice on clip gain in Pro tools. I have seen how apps like Nuendo or Vegas have very simple and fast solutions to this problem.

I tip would be most appreciated.

Thank you!

Calle

Also, does anyone know a shortcut for "solo track"? It drives me crazy.

I usually insert an L1 on all of my Dialog Tracks & automate the Threshold. You can do this with any compressor [0:0 ratio...] It'll usually give you 30+ db of gain.

In PT 8 pressing "shift S" (mac) will put the selected track into solo. Not sure of command for pc users. PT 7.x.x does not have this feature.
On the subject of clip gain you might find some help in this post http://duc.digidesign.com/showthread.php?t=195904

Ok. It seems like clip gain is something I just have to wait for.

Thanks for replying.

I also had these problems with low level production audio and think 'only' 12dbs of headroom is one of PT's weaknesses. Now I run the dialogues through a subgroup to give my self another 12dbs and use both faders to achieve a better level without clipping. It is far quicker than fiddling around with gain automation or audiosuite, but I too would be interested if someone else has a better method.

There is no easy way to deal with low level production sound. If only audiosuite had a handles setting! As mentioned, I automate the trim plug-in, L1 threshold, and extra auxes when need be. Although I try to keep the limiter threshold untouched, and set trim (or two trims, or use the gain setting on an inserted EQ) to keep things at nominal level.

Do you know the control-command-left/right arrow to quickly change plug-in automation views? It's a great time saver.

Shift-S in PT8, mousing-and-clicking before PT8

While in Shuttle Transport mode (preferences) press the 6 key on extended keyboard.

Or Cntrl+5 (Mac) Start+5 (PC) if you are in LE where shuttle transport mode isn't an option.
