Default Tried to install Intro and got First. . . . .

OK looooong story . . . . . in elapsed time anyway.
Started about 3 or 4 years ago when I tried to install Pro Tools First.
Didn't work. I was then and am still on Windows 10 and it seemed my laptop didn't have quite the exact correct version of Windows for PTF, although AFAIK it was up to date. Anyway I gave up and deleted most of the Pro Tools stuff.

Moving on several years to now. . . . . . I found out about Pro Tools Intro and decided to give it all another go. Went through the install procedure for Intro. I remembered my Pro Tools ID incredibly so logged in at the relevant point - it would have my previous details still I guess.

When I opened the 'Link' utility I got, among other things 'Pro Tools' and 'Pro Tools First'. NO 'Pro Tools Intro'. So I tried installing 'Pro Tools' thinking this would end up as Intro but it didn't. Nope. It just installed the full version and asked if I would like to buy a licence. Not right now thankyou.

So I re-deleted every PT thing I could find including the licence key stuff and tried again from scratch with the 'Intro' install. But clearly Avid knows me too well and it just put everything back exactly as it was. Still no 'Intro'. So I thought 'what the hey' and tried 'First' as it was looking at me.

And it works! What seems to have happened, is sometime in the intervening years my laptop has got updated to the correct version for PT. So I don't have Intro but I do it seems have First! Do I care? I'm not sure. All I want is way to get a look at basic Pro Tools operation (without the time pressure of an expiring trial period). Would Intro give me any more than First to get a basic idea?

I'm tempted to leave things well alone. It's taken me 4 years to get a look at Pro Tools and I don't want to muck it up again, but then I also don't want to get used to something that's now radically changed.

If anyone has had a similar thing happened please let me know if you found out the general problem area. I do have the option of going to a different Win 10 computer but maybe I'd have to be a different person with a new ID, my partner could develop a sudden interest in PT for the purposes of I guess.

Maybe that way I could get First AND Intro.

Hey there... Marianna here :)

The Pro Tools First is coming up as there are left over licensing folders most likely on your Win 10 computer. We have a universal installer for Intro, Artist, Studio and Ultimate but looks like First is trumping that and coming up.

I would do the following:

1. Unhide hidden files and folders.
2. On Win 10 - Open Folder Options > open "This PC". Click View and select “Options”
3. Click on the “View” tab. In the Folder Options window, choose View, select "Show hidden files, folders and drives", and then click OK. (Or you can type %programdata% on any folder's address bar and hit Enter.)
4. Please update Avid Link to the latest possible version. You can do so inside Avid Link itself. Click on the Products tab on the left, then find Avid Link and click Update.
5.***Open the task Manager utility and Stop the following processes.
·***** AvidLink.exe
·***** AvidBackgroundservices
6. Delete the folders listed at the end of each line listed below ( if found ).

C:\ProgramData\Avid\Avidlink\Cache ( <--example would be to delete cache)
C:\ProgramData\Avid\ Avidlink \Db
C:\ProgramData\Avid\Licenses
C:\ProgramData\Avid\Common
C:\ProgramData\Avid\SWL

7. Then launch Avid Link, sign in, let the app sync and then open pro Tools Intro.

Report back

Hi thesled,

I also checked your account and I noticed that your Pro Tools Intro license is not yet activated. Kindly open ilok license manager, sign in your iLok account and activate your Pro Tools Intro license into the machine or computer icon on the left pane of iLok license manager.

Hi again Marianna and Charles.

Thanks for your thoughts on this.

So it looks like it is down to mainly licencing issues and I may still have residual information on my computer although I deleted (I really mean 'de-installed') all the previous Pro Tools stuff. I will take all that on board and get a proper look at the directories as soon as I can. I will also make sure my Avid Link is up to date.

Also I will do the iLok update as Charles says.

This may take me a while as I have to be away for a few days and while I can keep an eye on the forum here I won't have access to my Pro Tools laptop.

So in the meantime thanks again and I look forward to picking this up again soon.

All the best

As Charles said: activate your Pro Tools Intro license in ILM. and, while you're there ...

Find your PT First license, right-click on it and choose "Deactivate" (it takes a little while to complete) - this license will just sit in your account, but no longer on your iLok, so it will no longer launch until "Activated" again

Then right-click on your iLok and choose "Synchronize" (also takes a little while)

Reboot

Launch Pro Tools
