Default New Laptop - New Egg Need suggestions!

Hey all,
I am looking at upgrading my laptop. I will be purchasing it from newegg. I want to stay on a pc.

Out of the current i7's for sale @ newegg what would you recomend? I don't know if i need to stay with a 740qm or move to the sandybridge 2630(dualcore), etc.

i would like it to be a quad core and i don't need integrated graphics, which i see the sandybridge's having but the also have sb's with dedicated graphics.

i have been reading for a couple of days but the best laptop thread is to diverse in systems for me to be able to make my mind up.
Please help.
Derek

I have a HP ProBook 4520 with an i3 in it. It runs Pro Tools 9 really well. I did have to buy a firewire express card for when I use my 003 though. I just thought a ProBook with an i7 might be a good option for you.

They have firewire and just work with no problems. At least I have had no problems.

i realize that is the common suggestion, but i am a happy pc user and dont want a mac. the one i posted has firewire and an expresscard slot. plus the new sb quad processor. My big question is about the graphics card.

how does your mbp compare to your desktop, i have a similar setup and want my laptop to be as close to that power as i can afford.

Well of course it is not as powerful as my desktop. But it records well for a mobile unit. And I have done some fairly complex mixes on it but normally mix on my desktop.

The Hp in your sig does it do what you need it to?

no i have to run reaper on it due to integrated graphics. and i use it as a mixer for my pa. and i have to run it at 256samples for it to run smoothly. about 14-16 channels using my profire. i would like to get down to 128 with a couple of plugins and use pt for the mixing and recording of live gigs and band practice. so i would say that it does not, and my wife wants a new laptop, so it is a greenlight for me to upgrade...

There are a few here that run PTs on PC Laptops. And I think AVID have a couple of qualified laptops they recommend. I would see what the others here are using with success and see what their mileage is.

Upgrading to a more stout PC Laptop is in noway a guarantee that you will be able to use it with PTs.

I am not a MAC fan boy nor am I a Winblows fan boy. Both platforms should be looked at as a tool in a tool kit.

I went with a PC desktop for the cost factor. Very powerful and stable.

I went with a MacBook Pro for my mobile setup for the stability and a virtual hassle free experience. I did not want to blaze a new trail. I wanted what would work.

So I am not trying to swing you either way but am only giving you my reasoning for why I chose a MAC over a PC for a laptop.

But if you do go with a PC find out what folks here are using. And get what they got. Then you will be doing what they are doing... Recording

Thanks for the time to respond. i am just trying to get the most bang for my buck. from reading, the toshiba has a intel cheipset, intel processor and dedicated nvidea graphics. i think i am going to pull the trigger on it and see what happens, if it doesn't work i can return it in a couple of days and start over. i don't have anything against macs either, i would just like to keep everything on the same os, and the new mbp are more than i want to spend on my laptop. i know that the i5 dual core is not enough for me so a core 2 duo wouldn't be either. anyway i will report back hopefully with good news.

I've got a Toshiba Satellite P500 i7 Q740 1.73GHz 8GB W7 Home Prem x64 SP1 and hope to god that PT9 will work. I've ordered it and am waiting.

I feel as though I read somewhere about issues with a Satellite i7 setup.

Does anyone remember that, or was I dreaming?
