Default Carbon with Old 2013 Intel iMac?

Please don't flame me for my ancient setup, but I have a tech client who's requiring me to obtain an Avid Carbon for a project. Tho I'm upgrading to a Mac Studio shortly, this project may start beforehand. So will Carbon...

- work with my 2013 Intel iMac, running Catalina and ProTools Ultimate 2021?
-can I plug the AVB cable directly into my iMac Gigabit Ethernet port?
-if not, can I convert the AVB to either Thunderbolt for the iMac, or Thunderbolt 3 to work with an OWC Thunderbolt 3 dock I have?

Thanks for any info. Wish I had the Mac Studio already in, but it is what it is.

Steve

Carbon Requirements are here:

https://kb.avid.com/pkb/articles/en_...n-Requirements

I used Catalina on an Intel MacPro 2019 when it first came out. Looks like Carbon will run on an Intel Mac with Catalina still, up to 2023.9 (and probably beyond, just not tested), but the earlist iMac supported is
*Late 2015 Retina 5K 27" iMac17,1 Quad-Core i7 'Skylake' 4.0 GHz

It does run on a 2013 Mac Pro though, so I imagine Avid either haven't tested it with a 2013 iMac, or they don't consider it powerful enough. Doesn't mean you can't make it work (although I suspect the iMac fan will crank a lot).

It's hard to tell if your iMac has AVB support on the Ethernet port, but any Mac with TB will work, using the Apple double-dongle or the Sonnet adapter.
If I had to guess, I'd say there is a good chance that the iMac Ethernet port will work with Carbon.

I think your problem will be CPU power. AVB is a bit of a pig for some reason, even though the idea of Carbon is to offload the low-latency processing to DSP. Whether this will just mean your iMac is stressed, or it might mean drop-outs, I have no idea.

Dominic

Thanks Dominic for the info. The good news is that I'm just recording voiceover, no plugs and processing. But yeah, I'm still trying to figure out if the 2013 iMac Gigabit Ethernet will support the AVB. Steve

If it has a Thunderbolt 2 port, it supports AVB. I run a Carbon on a 2012 Mac mini off and on, no issues.

I use Carbon on a 2014 iMac pretty regularly for remote recording. Works well. Fan will spin up on the iMac a bit, though.
