Default Best way to Edit fast in ProTools when working with movie file

Hello,

I use ProTools 2021.07, Mac mini 2018 (3.2Ghz, 16GB of ram)

When I import movie file (like a full movie about 1hour and half) into ProTools, Protools doesn't start quick when recording and editing.

What should I do to improve?

I also use a BlackMagic ultra 4K at another studio bringing my Mac mini.
Everything is as slow as my home setup, so the Black Magic doesn't change the speed...

Set the video track in the edit window to just show the blank block in the timeline, without stills. Not in front of ProTools so I forget the exact wording.

That usually helps me some.

It always feels sluggish to me when a video is online.

Dont have problems with 23.9----22 min hi res stuff, but lately these 24fps stuff really makes it jerky.....

You could try Avid's codec. For me, on a 5,1 Mac Pro fastest setting is 720p DNxHR Lowq at 36000 bitrate (i use ff-works for that encode) Good luck!

What drive is the movie file running from? If its a spinning drive, then an SSD would likely speed things up

All of the above! For a long video like that, I'd convert it to a lower bit rate. This is a useful (free) tool for conversions: https://www.shutterencoder.com/en/

I do Described Video for movies and have found when the Transport start time slows down, it's best if I close Pro Tools, rename the session Old "Name", restart Pro Tools and make a new session and import the Video and Audio Tracks I need. Seems to get things "back to speed" for the most part.

Seems like a cumbersome work-around. Sure would be cool to find the problem & a better solution.
