Default NI Battery causing CPU spikes - why?

I've been having many problems with my system latetly. After fixing several things and even wiping my hard drive and starting over, I'm starting to see a pattern. I use NI Battery (1, not 2) and bring it into ProTools through a VST to RTAS wrapper.

When my sessions are not playing, the CPU Usage meter just goes up and up and spikes out causing me to not be able to play the session. It acts almost exactly the same as the well-known DVerb problem, but I do not have a DVerb in my session.

I've unplugged Battery and the CPU settles down immediately. When I plug it back in, it spikes back up, so I'm pretty sure this is at leatst one of my problems.

Has anybody seen this or have a theory on why it is taking up so much CPU?

Tim

I see the same problem with NI guitar rig. If I have a session at 50% on the cpu meter and add a GR plugin, the meter jumps up about 15%. Add another and it jumps again and by the 4th, the meter has gone red. Best solution is to record the processed audio so you can disable the plugin as soon as possible.

Well, yes, I know that I can just record the tracks, but I'm not done! Especially in a program like battery, I change the beats frequently, plus I'll adjust all of the individual drum levels on a final mix - so I'd really like to get it working.

How much RAM do you have? I have read that you need 1.5 gigs of RAM to use multi-sampled software like battery. I only have 512meg right now and I have a difficult time with battery's cpu usage. I have great success with sample tank 2. it is much, much easier on the system. A little more limited than battery 2, but it is fantastic and very usable software when you get used to it.
