Default Would You Use a Digi002 in a Major Label Session?

Hello,

I am an audio engineer about to begin a session for a major record label in a world-class British studio. The producer of the session has asked my advice regarding the purchase of a digi 002 to use during the overdub process. Here is what he wants to do--and I see no reason why it won't work, however I am seeking advice as to the feasibility of this plan--

1. Track drums/rhythm guitar/bass to 2" tape striped w/ SMPTE

2. Hire a ProTools HD system to transfer all of the tracks (locked to SMPTE) to ProTools at 96k.

3. Transfer session files and audio from HD system to 002 system on Powerbook G4 (via Ethernet, I assume)

4. Open sessions on 002 system, do submixes/bounces to free up voices, and overdub lead guitar and vocals using Rosetta A/D---->S/PDIF input on 002.

5. Transfer session files and audio from 002 system back to hired ProTools HD system, sync HD system to 2" tape for mixdown.

Other than just being plain annoying, is there any reason why NOT to do this?

Thank you in advance.

Hello. Is there any reason for the 002 that you absolutely must have? How about track to 2", transfer to Pro Tools HD, stay in Pro Tools HD for overdubs, editing, etc., transfer back to 2". You will have some limitations with the LE software, that may or may not be a big deal, depending on what you are doing and how you do it. But since you are already renting the HD system, I don't see the need for the 002 purchase or rental. You can use your Apogee or other third party converters with the HD system if you get a 192 Digital I/O interface if you desire that. Don't get me wrong. You can do it the way you described. I just think the 002 is an unnecessary step which may limit you. Good luck.

Oh yeah, remember 002 gets the voices in PT 6.0!! No smpte with the 002 either. And I don't think you can record at 96k thru the lightpipe or s/pdif BUT, the 002 will allow you to record anywhere without using $$studio$$ time

you can do 96k through the lightpipe its just the lightpipe architecture only allows four channels at 96K. Get it straight mate! Just kidding. I love the 002 its mega brilliant.

If it's a world class studio, etc. I can't believe they don't know this. Sounds like the guy wants the 002 faders for the sub-mixes and maybe so he can carry it around with a laptop (and, yeah,to save studio time costs/?) Otherwise, I agree, just stay in HD.

That's a clever way to get the label to pay for
his 002 rig.

FWIW 002 does SMPTE time code. It just doesn't have the graphics and you need a third-party syncronizer exactly like a 2" machine needs.

Still for what's being described it ought to be ok. I'd still probably want an outboard mike pre and limiter for vocals.

Thanks to all who responded. Yes, the only reason for using an 002 as opposed to keeping the HD is to save money on HD rental fees. And of course, he can buy the 002 and rent it back to the project and come close to (if not completely) paying it off. And be able to take the entire project to his hotel room and work on it when he should be sleeping.

When did Digi make this announcement regarding the 002? That would be good news.

Best regards,
