UN-partitioning a hard drive?

I partitioned my 40 gig main hard drive on my G4 when I first got it, and now I wish I hadn't. It's enough of a problem (especially now that my main partition isn't big enough to hold all 15 gigs of audia that my ipod can hold...) that I'm ready to see if I can UN-partition it. I have a second hard drive in the computer that's 80 gigs and a 250 gig firewire drive.

I would just copy everything from the 3 partitions to the 250 gig firewire drive, erase the disk and reinstall everything, but I'm afraid that I'll lose a bunch of settings or worse, that I'll have to reauthorize all my plug in, etc.

Does anybody have any info on this?

Look into Carbon Copy Cloner. A free software that'll move your entire OS X boot drive complete with all settings to a new drive.

You've got 330gb of space between your second internal and your FW drive, store your ipod files there.

Go into Disk Utility and create a "Disk Image" then store it on another drive or other media that's large enough and reformat and unpartition the original drive. When you are done, simply restore the "disk Image" onto the original drive. Works great and saves a lot of trouble.

I've done it many times without problems.

Few reasons, and maybe I could be doing it better, I'm not sure....: First of all, I want to use the 250 as a backup drive, so while my mp3's will be on it, they should be redundant. OK, so that leaves the other internal drive space, right? Nope. I've set aside the 80 gig internal drive for Pro Tools files (fills up faster than I thought....) so that leaves the other partition of my 40 gig drive BUT from what I understand, iTunes will only play mp3's that are on your boot/main partition.

Am I wrong? (I might be...)

OS9 and OSX sure, just make a disk image of the whole drive or the partitions so do them separately. but you'll have to restore them onto their own partitions 'cause they won't work on the same partition.

But since I'm trying to undo the partitions, won't I be up a creek since you say they won't work on the same partition?
