That is the question...
I have been happily working with an ancient Mac G5 (PowerPC, not even Intel!) HD2 system for close to 20 years, along with a 24 channel D-Command and XMon, running PT 7.4. I know, I know, but it has served my relatively simple needs and has been absolutely rock solid all these years. I have a private studio, mostly for my own solo work and the occasional mix job. Yesterday (thankfully just after I sent my fourth solo album out for mastering) the G5 finally gave up the ghost, and no amount of coaxing could get it working properly. I did have a clone of the boot drive, but it either has also died or the G5 simply can't see it. Nor do I have a DVD of the OS sufficiently close to the machine's current OS version to boot from it. I do have all of my work saved to a separate external drive, so at least I won't lose any data. Anyway, it's well past time to do something. I want to stay in PT, and I definitely want to keep my D-Command, which I love. I wouldn't say money is no object, but I won't flinch at replacing the HD2 system with one HDX card (all I need), along with a Mac Studio. I know lots of people say hybrid works fine, or even just completely native, but I like the solidity of my current HD system, and not having to worry at all about latency. Also, my previous HD2 systen enabled me to last a really long time with replacing the computer, and I'm not getting any younger, this could be the last major studio upgrade I need in my lifetime. So, my question is whether I can run the D-Command with a modern Mac (with some sort of M chip) and current PT software? I know at least in the past it's been OK to do so under Rosetta, is that still doable? I would hate to have to pop for an S4 (although I could if I had to)--I've seen the S1 and it's too plasticky for my tastes. I don't have any local connections who are PT experts, and I'm a little leery of just calling a store like Sweetwater and relying on someone random there who may or may not be an expert (unless someone has a specific recommendation). Thoughts would be greatly appreciated! |

These legacy surfaces are only supported under Rosetta. As long as Rosetta is still supported,... once it is no longer supported/a part of macOS then you will need to freeze your system at an older release with Rosetta.
We've had a very long transition from Apple, I would not be surprised if new macOS support on Intell Macs is not discontinued in the next year or so and would not be surprised if Rosetta is discontinued in the same time frame. |
